2021 Australian Good Design Awards: Our Favourite Winners
Established in 1958, Australian Good Design Awards is the country’s highest design honour, celebrating ground-breaking design and innovation across broad sectors and industries.

This year, more than 70 design and architectural experts from Australia and around the world have evaluated a record number of 930 applications against criteria for Good Design, Design Innovation, and Design Impact.

Here are some remarkable winners of the 2021 Australian Good Design Awards.

The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service Newman Clinic Healthcare Hub

Designed by Kaunitz Yeung Architecture and commissioned by Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service, the PAMS Healthcare Hub is the first main healthcare facility of any type to be constructed in Newman in order to provide healthcare services to the many communities in the Western Desert of Western Australia. Newman is the main town in the Shire of East Pilbara, where the majority of the Aboriginal population lives. The primary aim of this clinic is to provide healthcare services for Martu and Niaboli people within their region while minimising the huge financial burden and negative mental health impacts caused by leaving their Country and family for treatments in Perth.

The architect of the project has spent significant time in these communities over many years and that resulted in a fine architectural building that is sensitively co-designed with the traditional owners of the land. Highlighting the cultural and sustainable aspects of the building, it is constructed predominantly with rammed earth. This created a connection between people and land that is extremely significant for Aboriginal people. The landscaping around the building enables ecological repairs in the degraded site with endemic species as well, while facility also features a 150kW rooftop photovoltaic array that is anticipated to provide 100% of the building’s electricity as the region get 330 days of sun a year.

The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service Newman Clinic Healthcare Hub won the 2021 Australian Good Design Award: Best in Class for Architectural Design, Commercial and Residential category and the Australian Good Design Award for Sustainability category as well.

The architectural output of this development is imperative, it is required to enable a state-of-the-art facility that is connected to people, Country and culture. In this way, Newman will support high levels of care whilst being imbued with humanity and embraced by the community.

Simone LeAmon

This year’s Good Design Australia’s Women in Design Award was awarded to Simone LeAmon, Hugh D.T Williamson Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture for the National Gallery of Victoria.

I am honoured … It is humbling to be recognised for one’s contribution to the design sector. The vitality and prosperity of the Australian design community, its capacity to chart opportunities, unlock value for culture and enterprise, and deliver benefits for people, communities and the planet is my passion. Equally, is my desire to see women and people from diverse backgrounds both participate and be recognised for their good work in design. I hope this Award sets forth the thought – If she can do it, so can I.
 – SIMONE LEAMON.

This year marks the third year of this prestigious award, which was created to address the significant gender imbalance within leadership roles in the design industry. Upholding the importance of design and creativity, Simone LeAmon, who is a designer, design educator, and curator, has established a career as one of Australia’s foremost design professionals.

Since 2015, LeAmon has held the position of Hugh D.T Williamson Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture at the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV department is the first of its kind for an art gallery in Australia and LeAmon has co-curated an extensive program of Australian and international contemporary design with vigour, including the delivery of the annual Melbourne Design Week.

Along with these two wonderful winners, many amazing designers and architects across more than 30 categories were celebrated on this year’s awards week, which took place from October 11–15. Head to the Good Design Awards website to browse the full list of the winners!
