‘And Just Like That…’ Is This Even Necessary?

‘And Just Like That…’ Is This Even Necessary?
The new, highly anticipated SATC reboot may be a little far from what we expected it to be, but let’s not judge just yet – there’s still hope as the show develops its plot. (Warning: SPOILERS!)

*This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of the Sex and the City reboot series, And Just Like That.

And Just Like That... follows those beloved characters, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, as they navigate their journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to an even more complex reality in their 50s.

Like a lot of women around the world, when the news broke about bringing back our favourite girl group of the 90s, my excitement was REAL – I honestly couldn’t wait to see the group friends back on the small screen as they keep living their lives in the Big Apple. There’s just one exception: they’re all in their 50s now, and things have definitely changed. As Miranda says in the premiere, ‘We can’t just stay who we were, right?’

Back in the day, the series was all about having it all in the Big Apple while in their 30s – with often unattainable lifestyles, if we look at it from an objective point of view. However, we watched them and their lives for six marvellous seasons! There was a lot of love from the dating advice, amazing shopping inspo, and most importantly, beautiful friendships, all up until the show ended at the beginning of the ’00s. Yes, it felt like the close of an era for many women worldwide, so it’s no surprise that the reboot got so much hype (until its premiere).

One thing that fans have missed – myself included – is Samantha Jones. Yes, she’s briefly mentioned during the first two episodes, but to be honest, it does not do justice to her former character; sending Samantha to London for work is a smart move from the producer’s team, but not precisely what she deserved after all those years… In this sense, fans are pretty concerned about the flow of the series, so we’ll have to wait and see how everything develops.

Almost a similar fate found Mr Big, the most loved/hated character of the OG series. Who doesn’t remember the ups and downs over the years with Carrie? But shock was not even the half of it when the Peloton bike stole the show – yes, that bike everyone was obsessed with back in lockdown. I can’t even put the dots together to find some kind of sense to this ending. After everything that Carrie and Big have been through, didn’t they think the epic couple deserved another kind of finale, to say the least?

Moving past the negatives, though – the series back in the 90s lacked diversity, to say the least. There’s still a lot to uncover in this sense, but the reboot has made efforts to expand the scope of its casting, and there’s hope that new characters Che Diaz and Dr Nya Wallace take more of a prime role.

On another note, with the ladies being in their 50s, we would like to see more of how a woman can still have it all if she wants to at any age. We’ll report back on this end while the ladies keep mourning the absence of Mr Big. Only Carrie would be able to put together an outfit like those of the good old days to say goodbye to the love of her life. We can’t wait to see the blue shoes make more and more appearances, and we’re so hopeful that this season will delight us with iconic looks for days, like the tulle skirt or LBD’s (not to mention the Manolo’s!). That’s something we really look forward to as the season goes on.

Basically, there’s some potential going on here. And in a testament to the characters Darren Star initially formed through SATC – it’s nice to be back with the girls. The season continues with the remaining eight episodes, premiering weekly each Thursday at 7:00pm AEDT on Binge here in Australia.
