From Brisbane to the Big Apple: AMELIA Designs

From Brisbane to the Big Apple: AMELIA Designs
Meet Amelia Scott, the young Aussie entrepreneur taking the fashion industry by storm.

So, what did you get up to during the pandemic? Open a TikTok account? Spend a few hours on YouTube? Hunker down in your bedroom for days on end, dreaming of a life outside of those four, stifling walls? I’m sure all of us did these things to some degree, but a lot of us also picked up hobbies and started projects we’d always wanted to do.

Brisbane designer Amelia Scott did all that and then some – she started a fashion label. And now her pieces are stocked in boutiques across New York, Connecticut, and South Carolina. Oh, and did we mention she’s just 21 years old? We know, right?! Talk about a #girlboss in the making (if that’s even a thing anymore). A multi-disciplinary designer, Scott burst into the fashion industry in early 2021 with her brand AMELIA designs, a passion project she started from her bedroom in Brisbane in the thick of COVID-19.

With the growing trend to move away from fast fashion, Scott noticed a demand for ‘enduring, quality pieces’ that people could feel good about wearing. So, seeing a gap in the market, she created them. AMELIA designs offers one-of-a-kind, sustainable, handcrafted knit garments that wouldn’t look out of place at a ski resort in Aspen. But they’re also cosy enough to throw on the next time you have a lazy night in (roaring fire and toasted marshmallows optional).

Scott cut her teeth creating graphics and websites for local Brisbane businesses Farmhouse Kedron, Oh Boy, Bok Choy! and Miss Sophia's Gelateria. But she was always drawn to fashion – her grandmother taught her to sew and knit when she was a child – and despite the (ahem) turbulent nature of the fashion industry, Scott’s business has gone from strength to strength since launching eleven months ago.

AMELIA designs pieces are built to be long-lasting, unique and immaculately constructed. No one is doing anything like this in Australia.
– AMELIA SCOTT.

Her apparel has already been featured in Marie Claire and Vogue (yes, Vogue!) and she’s collaborated with well-known influencers, including Saskia Jenkins, Jadè Tunchy, Ella McFadin, and Kate Bartlett, to name just a few. The budding entrepreneur has also become an influencer in her own right, amassing close to ten thousand followers on Instagram and millions of TikTok views. She’s even started a YouTube channel where she empowers young women to pursue their goals.

But it was one of Scott’s TikTok videos that caught the attention of Rebecca Hessel Cohen, the Founder and Creative Director of New York-based womenswear brand LoveShackFancy, and things took off from there. Not only is AMELIA designs now stocked in Hessel Cohen’s New York boutique, Scott has even relocated to the city that never sleeps to develop her skills at the renowned Parsons School of Design.

It’s a long way from her bedroom in suburban Brisbane, that’s for sure. Watch this space!
